The History

Reformed in 2002, the Tasmanian Ballet Company is a "Not for profit" public company, limited by guarantee, listed on the Register of Cultural Organisations and is the State Ballet of Tasmania.

His Excellency the Governor Of Tasmania, The Honorable Mr. Peter G Underwood A.O., is the patron. It is a seasonal Company, not a project based one, with an annual budget to allow one major performance season in addition to its regional tour and the school dance workshops programme which tours the whole of Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Ballet Company provides an official state-wide performing classical ballet company showcasing all major ballet productions (e.g. Swan Lake, The Nutcracker) as well as local choreography. The Company has a focus of classicism, and as such appeals to a wide audience. The Company is committed to making high quality classical ballet accessible to all Tasmanians, especially those living in regional areas of the state.

Each performance season the Company contracts between nine and twelve professional ballet dancers, in addition to the Choreographer and Ballet Master.
